How to Clean and Care for Coir and Rubber Mats

Why Mat Care Matters

A quality coir or rubber mat is an investment in your home. With the right care routine, it will last for years and keep doing its job — stopping dirt, grit, and moisture at the door. Here's exactly how to look after yours.

Cleaning Coir Mats

Daily / Weekly: Shake and Beat

The simplest and most effective thing you can do is take your coir mat outside and give it a firm shake or beat it against a hard surface. This dislodges the loose dirt and grit that accumulates in the fibres. Do this at least once a week, or more often in muddy seasons.

Vacuuming

Use a vacuum fitted with a stiff-brush or beater-bar attachment. Avoid suction-only vacuuming as it's less effective on coarse coir fibres. Vacuum both the top and, if possible, the underside of the mat to remove trapped particles.

Spot Cleaning

For localised stains:

  1. Scrape off any solid material with a blunt knife or spoon.
  2. Mix a small amount of mild detergent with cold water.
  3. Dab — don't rub — the stain with a damp cloth.
  4. Blot dry with a clean towel.
  5. Allow to air-dry completely before placing back at the entrance.

Important: Never soak a coir mat or put it through a washing machine. Excess moisture causes the natural fibres to swell, shrink, and deteriorate, and can lead to mould in the backing.

Drying

If your coir mat gets wet from rain, lift it up and stand it on its edge or hang it so air can circulate on both sides. Never leave a wet mat flat on the floor — moisture trapped underneath will damage both the mat and your flooring.

Cleaning Rubber Mats

Rubber mats are far more water-tolerant and easier to deep-clean.

  1. Take the mat outside and hose it down or rinse it in a bucket of water.
  2. Scrub with a stiff brush and a mild soap solution.
  3. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
  4. Shake off excess water and leave flat to air-dry in a shaded spot (prolonged direct sunlight can cause rubber to crack over time).

For rubberised coir mats, follow the coir care routine on the top surface, but you can use a damp cloth on the rubber backing to wipe it clean.

General Tips to Extend Mat Life

  • Rotate the mat 180° every few months to distribute wear evenly.
  • Use a mat gripper or slip-resistant pad underneath if your mat moves on a smooth floor surface.
  • Bring indoor-adjacent mats inside during extended wet weather or heavy monsoon periods.
  • Replace your mat when the fibres are worn flat — a mat with no pile left can't scrape.
